PC Specs - show of hands
I have about $4500 in budget to spend on a top-end PC. I'm trying to get a state-of -the-art machine that will hopefully not become obsolete in a year or two. The machine that I'm currently looking at has these specs: PII-400 CPU 512K CPU fan Intel Seattlle 82440BX PII Motherboard 128MB S-Dimm PC100 10ns w/Eprom

Acceptable PC Specs?
I'd upgrade my pc. At the moment it's equipped with Intel pentium III (500Mhz, 384MB Ram) processor but, depending on costs, i'm planning to pass to AMD. Which kind of processor/motherboard is the best beetween AMD & Intel for 3dsMax using in terms of performance/reliability? Any guess is accepted. Thank u.

SAS PC Specs
I'd love to meet the guy who owns an Xbox but doesn't own a PC or laptop. Hell, they sell low-cost PCs at Fry's with superior specs than what I listed for around $500 before rebates. The problem with PCs is that developers don't optimize properly for the hardware. You can't compare PC specs and Xbox specs directly.

I've got a DVD writer on my Acorn with only 64Mb RAM. ;-) But it's used purely for data. I'd appreciate some guidance on PC specs to make this doable. My basic approach is to use my desktop machine to process the video files, while having the actual files on a separate file server.
